Seepersad and Sons: Naipaulian Creative Synergies
Friends of Mr Biswas in collaboration with The UWI Department of Literary, Cultural and Communication Studies and The National Archives of Trinidad and Tobago are hosting a conference on the works of the three Naipauls - Seepersad and his sons, Vidia, Nobel Laureate, and Shiva.
The conference, titled “Seepersad and Sons: Naipaulian Creative Synergies” is free and open to the public. It takes place from Wednesday 28th to Friday 30th October 2015 at The UWI Open Campus Auditorium, Gordon St., St Augustine.
This three-day conference seeks to explore the interface between the works of the brothers and/or that of the father and his son/s by bringing together academics across disciplinary backgrounds to exchange ideas and consider novel perspectives on the Naipauls’ thoughts and expressions. The conference will also contribute to the preservation of the Naipauls’ history and legacy and build our national literary archives and heritage.
Themes include:
- Journalism and travel writing
- India and popular/critical responses to their writings on India
- Democracy and freedom
- Constructions of masculinity and femininity
- Experimentation and innovations in form and genre bending/crossing
- Critical and popular responses to the Naipauls
Sessions will take the form of panel discussions, feature addresses, writers’ talks and readings as well as a dramatic presentation.
