In commemoration of the International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024) and the UN Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition (August 23), the National Archives in collaboration with Afrika House and the Merikin’s Heritage Foundation is pleased to host the gala screening of Bigger than Africa carded for Saturday August 24, 2019, 7.00 – 10.00 pm at Digicel IMAX Theatre, One Woodbrook Place, Port of Spain.
This documentary, directed by Toyin Ibrahim Adekeye, Nigerian-born Los Angeles-based Director, follows the journey of the Yoruba people from West Africa to countries such as Trinidad and Tobago, Brazil, Cuba, and the United States and highlights their cultural retentions today.
Join us for this special screening which will include a Q&A by the Director and two exhibitions by the National Archives, “Our African Legacy: Roots and Routes” and “Celebrating the Merikins: our heritage, our faith, our future” The local film “The Merikins” will also be screened prior to the main feature film.
