This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Viceroy of India's announcement to suspend the recruitment and shipping of Indian labourers to work in overseas colonies as well as the arrival of the last ship of indentured labourers to Trinidad.
On 12 March 1917, the recruitment of Indian labourers was suspended. Anti-indentureship protests which had started prior to 1917, continued throughout India, eventually leading to the abolition of the system on 1 January, 1920.
The last ship to arrive with indentured labourers in Trinidad was the S.S. Ganges on 22 April 1917.
