Tzarna De Silva is the winner of the National Archives’ promotional hamper for Archives Awareness Week 2015. Tzarna, a student of the UWI Open Campus Sixth Form, was presented with the hamper which included an Apple Ipad mini, by Avril Belfon, Government Archivist on 21 January 2016.
Tzarna, who is currently pursuing History at the advanced level, visited the National Archives during Archives Awareness Week as part of the History Class outing organized by her teacher, Kirsha Parris. The class viewed the exhibition “Honouring Our Industrial Roots – Sugar, Cocoa, Asphalt and Oil” and toured the National Archives’ facilities. When quizzed on what had most impressed her at the National Archives, Tzarna was quick to indicate that she enjoyed the work being done by the conservation laboratory and expressed an interest in doing similar work.
The promotion was open to all visitors to the institution during Archives Awareness Week from 16-20 November 2015. Visitors were invited to answer historical questions based on the Week’s Exhibition and place their completed forms in a box for drawing of the winner with the correct answer.
Archive Awareness Week is hosted each year by the National Archives, a division of the Ministry of Communications. It aims to engage communities, schools and the public to bring them closer to their history by promoting the value of records and archives as well as the role and function of the National Archives.
